Complacent Contentment

While going through a storm recently, I was disturbed by the state of contentment that I felt. I have been through a number of storms but only had this feeling twice. This was very strange. Why would I be bothered about the absence of distress during trials, when the word of God repeatedly tells me not to worry.

What happens after we give our cares to God, trusting in His faithfulness by the Help of The Holy Spirit? When we are no longer burdened by our problems, not because they have been resolved but because we have laid them at the feet of Jesus. We are now in a place of contentment because we know God will work things out for our good and for His glory.

We could end up in a place where we stop praying earnestly and continually, which is not a good place to be. We should use this time of joyful stillness to give thanks to God for bearing our burdens just as he promised. We should not fall into the enemy's trap of becoming distant from God because we are not feeling distressed. When we find ourselves in a state of peace and inner joy during trying times, we must continuously give God the Glory. He is keeping His promise to be with us through afflictions. Our peace and joy are not of our own doing.

Let's think about how we would pray during the middle of a trial such as sickness when we do not feel this contentment. We would not want to be away from the presence of the Lord. We would be persistently calling on Him to help us. The Lord wants us to communicate with Him whether we are burdened or not. We are His children. He cares about every aspect of our lives, not just the hard parts. He shouldn't just get our attention when we're in trouble. We should go to Him with our hearts filled with thanksgiving and our mouths with praise with the same fervency as when we are seeking answers to prayers.

This is what I'm convinced The Holy Spirit is saying to me through this disturbance. Colossians 4:2 says to "continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving." Therefore even if we are at peace and not feeling overwhelmed by our troubles, there's still much to pray about. We can pray for others. Not just those in our local churches that we know personally. There are so many needs that we see as we go about our daily lives. There should be no pause in praying daily because we ourselves are okay. We must continue to approach God's throne of grace on behalf of others. We must keep going to Him.

Isaiah 32:11

“Tremble, you women who are at ease; Be troubled, you complacent ones; Strip yourselves, make yourselves bare, And gird sackcloth on your waists.”
