True Freedom

According to Scripture, every person is a slave of something (Rom. 6:15-23). Every person is enslaved to one of two things: either sin/selfishness or Jesus Christ.  Selfishness may feel like freedom  - after all, doesn't freedom mean doing what we want, without anything getting in the way?

But that kind of self-centered "freedom" actually enslaves. The false teachers in Peter's day were making it sound as if freedom in Christ might mean freedom from a strict commitment to pure living.

As Peter said, they "allure through the lust of the flesh, through lewdness" (2 Pet. 2:18). Evidently the false teachers were spreading the idea that once a person had accepted Christ through faith, he or she could do anything they wanted physically.

Peter taught that Christ redeemed us from sin and requires us to love Him enough to obey Him - body and soul (1 John 5:3). Obedience to Christ frees us from slavery to sin; it brings true freedom to live as pure children of God.
