Trusting the Lord with our decisions frees us from preoccupation with our problems (Prov.3:5-6). The verb "commit to" is from a word meaning "to roll". The idea is to "roll your cares unto the Lord."
Dedication is the foundation of commitment, without it the believer is unable to offer God anything else. Paul explains this process in Romans 12:1-2.
First, we should present our bodies as a living sacrifice to God. Second we're to avoid being conformed to this world, but strive to be transformed by renewing our minds through the Word of God. Finally, by doing those we can discover God's perfect will for our lives.
After the dedication of our bodies, what should we commit? We're to commit our eternal salvation to God, He is able to keep us (2 Tim. 1:12). Then our works as well as our goals in life are to be given to Him (Job 5:8; Psa. 37:5).
It is difficult but vital to commit our suffering experiences to God like Jesus Christ did when He was here on earth (1 Pet. 4:19; 2:23). In the hour of death, we can commit our very souls to our Heavenly Father.
Paul the apostle assures us that any and all such commitments to the Lord will be accepted and honored (1Cor. 15:58).
