He Knows Us Each By Name

I was running an errand just before the holidays and saw a familiar face as I was walking. This person looked so familiar that I thought about saying hi. They were in conversation as they walked and their voice was immediately recognizable. It dawned on me that this is some one I've seen only on television, I don't really know them at all. How embarrassing that would have been if I had started waving like we were old friends.I pondered that as I went on my way.

One week later a similar thing happened. I went to the New Year's Eve Service at my church. The friends I was with wanted to sit downstairs in the front so that's what we did. We had to be early because huge crowds were anticipated. We found seats close to the front and as we sat waiting for the service to begin, I noticed a familiar face to my left waiting to go on the stage. In a split second, I felt like I should be waving and saying hi but it dawned on me that though this person is very familiar to me, I'm not familiar to them. I've been at countless worship services, worshipping and praising God as they led so it felt like this was someone I knew personally. Now, had I waved I know it would not turn out to be embarrassing because we're in church and we greet people we don't know all the time.

Both situations got me thinking about the God we serve. I think it was His way of preparing me for what He wanted me to talk about next on this blog. We are not strangers to God. We are more than familiar to Him and we can approach Him even though we've never seen Him. He knows each of us personally and by name, before we were born. We do not need to worry about starting a conversation with Him because He is always accessible to us and loves when we come to Him, and spend time in His presence. He's not some distant thought, or someone we call on only when we're in church.

Though He sits high, He's not out of our reach. We can call on Him at any time. "He is as close as the mention of His name," just as the song says. He sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we may live with Him eternally and when Jesus left the earth, He left us His Holy Spirit. How amazing is that kind of love! Jesus is so much to us, He is that "friend that sticks closer than a brother." The one that laid His life down for His friends.

He knows each and everyone of us individually and collectively. He is always present and wants us to draw closer to Him. We can lift our hands and wave in praise, magnifying His Holy name because He is worthy of all of it. His word tells us that He inhabits the praise of His people, Psalm 22:3 KJV. We are invited to come boldly to God's throne of grace in Hebrews 4:16. This means we can confidently, without hesitation, approach God. He is waiting for even the repentant sinner who will have the same access to Him that those already saved do.

Psalms 33:14-15

From the place of His dwelling He looks On all the inhabitants of the earth; He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works.
