The Peace Blume

I received a Peace Lily plant from my daughter a few years ago. I placed it in my living room close to the window and began caring for it. The leaves would dry up at the tips even though I was watering it but not over doing it.

My mother has been gardening ever since I can remember and her plants thrived, so I called her to get some expert advice. She lives in the Caribbean where there is a different approach to doing many things and she told me to water it with rice water. When we cook rice in the Caribbean, we usually wash it  before use. That Sunday I would be making rice and peas so I would definitely have rice water for my plant. Every time I washed rice in preparation for cooking my plant would be watered. It began looking a little better after a while so I was eager to see it bloom. A year went by, then two but still no bloom. The plant got so much bigger and was thriving so where was the bloom?

I did some research and got some good tips concerning what to do to help it bloom. I got to work on it but another year went by and nothing happened. I continued to water it and spin the pot ever so often as it would lean towards the sun at the window. The anticipation I felt waiting for it to bloom faded over time. Sometimes I would even forget to water it.

I was sitting in my living room one Sunday afternoon in August 2025 and something caught my eyes. What appeared at first to be a new leaf was in fact a bloom in its very early stage. I was beside myself with joy. Finally it's happening! I was smiling inwardly and outwardly. It's an amazing feeling because of the years it took to get to this point.

I took photos almost every day because I wanted to record each stage of the bloom. The lily in full bloom is now the logo for this site and its social pages and is perfectly suited!
