Hiding Sin Hurts

It's good to make time for meditation and reflection, life can be hectic and demanding. But there's definitely a time when we need to open our mouths: in confession. Psalm 32 is a psalm of confession.

David shares his firsthand account as one who experienced relief when his "transgression is forgiven" (v. 1) He had tried to keep something from God only to report " my bones grew old through my groaning .... Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was turned into the drought of summer" ( vv. 3, 4).

Like David, we shrivel and weaken when we keep our sin inside. But when we acknowledge our sin to God and ourselves, He forgives us. You'll notice the word 'Selah' at the end of verse 5. It is a musical directive to pause and calmly think about what was said.

We confess, He forgives. We don't confess, we suffer. It's not that God is on our backs. It's that the very nature of wrongdoing works against our nature as people created in God's image. We are blessed when we push away selfish and sinful actions.

When we carry out the caring and productive actions we are designed to do, joyful mercies will surrounds us. We can sing when we listen and obey God's instructions. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled (Matt. 5:6)
