We don't know what the author was going through when he wrote Psalm 46 or what disaster was befalling the children of Israel. But the first words of worship they uttered were: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear ( v 1-2).
Notice that not fearing is a determined choice, fear won't help; but God will. Psalm 46 provided powerful truths for the Israelites: "Even though the earth be removed, .... the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea, .... waters roar and be troubled. God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved ( vv. 2, 3, 5).
After all the confessions to God and the psalmist's trust in Him, worshippers received the best assurance they could get. God's voice saying, "Be still, and know that I am God" (v. 10).
"Be still" in verse 10 is also translated "calm down, "stop striving", "let go", "be in awe". Trust God and see Him make a way for you; He has promised to be always with you. He said our strength shall be as our days.
