Evil is born within our hearts and ultimately it destroys us ( James 1:14-15). Do we have any choice in this matter? Definitely, we can take evil thoughts captive and replace them with good thoughts before they bear evil actions. (2 Cor. 10:5).
We can choose to allow God's Spirit to guide and empower us to obey Him. He will help us to know ourselves and recognize evil. Jesus knows our hearts (John 2:25). He knows our inclination to be evil and His response is to redeem us personally.
Jesus fulfilled what the prophet Ezekiel prophesied. "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you, I will take out the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh (Ezek. 36:26)
While it is easy to point at other people and see their flaws, Jesus asks us to look at our own hearts. The first step toward combating evil is recognizing that the problem is within us. Once we do that, then it's easier to refuse evil and embrace goodness.
