The Advocate

Did you know that as a believer, we have an advocate who is always with us. He is the promised comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus spoke about before leaving the earth after His resurrection.

The word of God tells us that He lives inside of us from the moment we accept Jesus as our personal Lord and saviour. He is our guide while we navigate life here on earth. He nudges us in the right direction because if left on our own, we would walk contrary to how we should as believers. Even though sometimes we may not be aware of it, if we pay close attention we will definitely recognize that we're not on our own. We are to be mindful that wherever we are and whatever we do, He is with us because we are followers of Christ. The word of God tells us that Jesus went to prepare a place for us but before doing so, He left us a Helper.

Have you ever been thinking about a situation, or trying to find the answer to a problem and as soon as you open your bible to read, you open to find the answer to the exact situation you were stressing over? One morning I was feeling very tired and was wrestling with whether I should go to church or not. When I opened the Bible App to read, the first thing I saw was "arise, shine for your light has come." I jumped up after reading and was very happy to be in church that day. I love to hear what the Lord has to say to me, not only by reading His word but also from those He has chosen to speak through. On another occasion I remember having no energy, possibly from not being well at the time. I opened the word and Isiah 40:29 was right there. "He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength."

I was out of work years ago and this was not long after spending so much to move into a new place. I was wondering how the grocery shopping was going to get done. In the middle of my worry, The Holy Spirit reminded me that I was not alone, that I am never alone. I haven't worried about things like that since.  The Lord has always provided. We really should worry less and pray more.

On a number of occasions after praying for someone, because it was my desire to know how they're doing, our paths would cross at the perfect time. One that stands out from about fifteen years ago, I had prayed for a homeless woman who was addicted to drugs. She was very intelligent but nevertheless homeless and needed to be delivered. I hadn't seen her for months until one day out of nowhere she appeared. I didn't recognize her at all until someone pointed out that it was indeed the same lady. To God be the glory her situation turned right around. She was in rehab the entire time, getting the help she needed. She looked amazing.

There was also a time when a friend asked me to go with her on an errand. We were walking on a road that I had never taken before. As we walked, I noticed a basket ball court up ahead. I could see from a distance there was a young boy shooting hoops with his ball. No one else was around. From a distance, one by one everything he was wearing looked familiar. I got closer and realized it was my own son. I didn't send him to a basketball court by himself. He went to his grandma's house and that's where I expected him to be. What he was doing there is a story for another time but do you see how I was guided down that road and why?

Have you noticed that sometimes when you're at home and you start listening to praise and worship songs, that ever so often you're not just only a listener? The Holy Spirit is present and you can feel that presence as you worship and praise.

John 14:26

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
